EXPLORE THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS

A JOURNEY INTO THE WILD

WORKSHOP IN-DEPTH

Spark your creativity.

My photo workshops are designed to be an extraordinary fun and learning experience. The goal is not only to improve your technical skills as a photographer but mainly and foremost to boost your visual skills as an artist. Creativity is at the heart of what I do.

Small groups for total attention.

The tours are aimed at everybody, from beginners looking for advice such as composition, metering, depth of field, etc, and through to advanced photographers wishing only to share their knowledge with other photographers and be guided to locations for new shooting opportunities. Small groups will guarantee total attention, support and feedback at each location we visit.

Flexible timetable and post-processing sessions.

The timetable is flexible and may depend on local weather conditions, but generally, the tour will be something like this:
Most days we’ll start early in the morning to reach our destination before sunrise. Here we have a couple of hours shooting session (if possible in more than one locations) after which we will head back to our guesthouse for a well-deserved full Scottish breakfast. The day will continue with either master classes about post-processing technique or driving to our next destination for sunset, depending on distance and weather conditions.

Push boundaries.

Unscheduled stops at the suggestion of a participant are always welcomed to allow photographs to be taken during our tours, as long as there is enough time and everyone agrees to do so. I myself have found many unexpected stunning photographs down the road while driving, as the Scottish highlands can reveal surprising wonders just at every turn, especially because of its ever-changing light. After all, this is the true essence of adventure.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TOUR INCLUDE:

Rannoch Moor

The great Rannoch Moor is a true paradise on Earth, the area is a vast stretch of moorland composed of blanket bog and dotted with countless lochans, rivers, and mountains. With fair weather, amazing photographs are virtually guaranteed. This is primarily a sunrise location, so early starts are to be expected to ensure the best light. The surrounding areas offer among the finest scenery in the whole of Scotland, among them are Loch Tulla, Glen Orchy and Glen Etive. Be prepared for a memorable photographic experience in this unique part of the world.

Buachaille Etive Mor

The guardian of the glen, Buachaille Etive Mor is one of the best known and loved of all the Munro peaks. The epic view of this iconic mountain from the main road makes it appear quite unassailable to climbers, and is one of the most photographed sights in Scotland. A distinctive triangular peak rising up from the valley with vertical walls and buttresses soar upwards so that the first image that springs to mind is a pyramid. The mountain can be photographed with nearly any weather condition and at any time of the day, and is ideal for both vertical and horizontal compositions. Rivers and waterfalls are perfect as foreground subjects for this epic sight.

Glencoe Valley

The drive road A82 through the Glencoe Valley is one of the most scenic road trips in the Scottish highlands. The superb Glen Coe area is a true gem, and offers not to be missed opportunities for landscape photography: snowcapped summits in winter, green valleys that turn from amber to orange in mid-season, waterfalls and lochs with their myriad of reflections are just everywhere around. The desolated and wild area is of incomparable beauty for its dramatic sceneries. Not surprisingly, photographers from all around the world flock the area in every season in search of the perfect shot.

Kilchurn Castle

We will visit the evocative ruins of Kilchurn Castle with a stunning setting on Loch Awe. The castle is surrounded by gentle hills on the north west side, which makes this location ideal at sunrise, when the first light hits the castle crosswise and gives the landscape an almost surrealistic atmosphere. On a calm day, reflections of the ruins in the loch can be quite spectacular. Often the castle is shrouded in mist, which makes the site even more evocative and eye-catching. Kilchurn Castle is truly a plunge into a magical dimension right out of a fairytale.

Loch Leven

Loch Leven is known for offering a number of excellent viewpoints both from a height and from water’s edge. The area boasts many raised bog, willows and reed beds, and a rich mix of wet grasslands. All of that, along with still water are a perfect ingredient to create stunning reflections. Photographers who love mirrored landscapes should not miss the unique opportunities that can be provided here. Loch Leven is primarily a sunset location, so we will set up our gear late in the afternoon on the hunt for reflections, panoramas and incredible sky hues at dusk.

Castle Stalker

This medieval castle is nicely set on an islet of loch Linnhe against a dramatic backdrop of mountains. The dreamlike atmosphere surrounding the castle turns into magic at sunset and dusk, when the light behind the castle brings out its distinctive shape. The location is very well suitable for both wide and longer focal lengths, while the fast moving tide provides an almost ever-changing foreground. Shooting from the loch shore is of particular interest at low tide, when the retreat of the water reveals amazing textures made of rocks and colorful seaweed.

Glenfinnan

Glenfinnan is a tiny village set in one of the finest Highland scenery, surrounded by mountains on three sides and by the shore of Loch Shiel. The site attracts visitors from everywhere who come here to see its main attraction, the Jacobite steam train, also known as the “Hogwarts Express” as seen in the Harry Potter movies. According to the train operating times, we will likely have a chance to photograph the Hogwarts Express while running across the impressive Glenfinnan viaduct, and superb views of Loch Shiel from a viewpoint accessible with a short walk over the hill.

Silver Sands

Moving towards the west coast we will drive along the A830 scenic route, also known as the Road to the isles, considered as one of the best drives in the country with plenty to see and photograph along the way. The stretch of coast from Arisaig north to Mallaig, known as the Silver Sands of Morar, features a stunning string of white sandy beaches with spectacular views across a turquoise sea towards the Small Isles of Rum and Eigg. What makes this place truly unique for photographers is the sublime seascape, which might make you think you are on some tropical island rather than Scotland.

PUSH YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY TO NEW HEIGHTS

To help participants improve their photographic skills, you are encouraged to explore each location we visit and to find your own viewpoints and compositions. You will be given assistance to capture the photograph and supported with technical and artistic tips.

The precise locations of most outings will be determined day-to-day according to seasonal developments and weather conditions in order to maximize the photographic potential of each day. Some venues indeed can be more interesting with particular weather conditions such as mist, others with clouds and so on. However, we will visit all the places aforementioned, weather permitting.

I am passionate about what I do and spend a lot of time into planning a workshop in order to ensure that everyone has a great experience and is able to make the most of the photographic opportunities and tuition.

THE TUTOR

GUIDO TRAMONTANO GUERRITORE

Guido is a photographer with 20 years of experience and over 16 years in Fine Art Landscape Photography. He has always been an advocate of knowledge sharing and a keen teacher. He regularly teaches classes and gives lectures about composition and techniques concerning landscape photography in schools and private organisations. He believes though that the best way to learn and improve skills is practicing in the field with the assistance of an expert photographer’s mentoring. This ensures a much faster and pleasant learning curve. His landscape photography workshops are a full immersion aimed at providing all participants the best support possible throughout the entire course length. The small group number of participants, typically 2 to 4 people, ensures continuous and tailored tuition, both in the field and out of it.
