THE ISLAND OF SUBLIME NATURE

WORKSHOP IN-DEPTH

Spark your creativity.

My photo workshops are designed to be an extraordinary fun and learning experience. The goal is not only to improve your technical skills as a photographer but mainly and foremost to boost your visual skills as an artist. Creativity is at the heart of what I do.

Small groups for total attention.

The tours are aimed at everybody, from beginners looking for advice such as composition, metering, depth of field, etc, and through to advanced photographers wishing only to share their knowledge with other photographers and be guided to locations for new shooting opportunities. Small groups will guarantee total attention, support and feedback at each location we visit.

Flexible timetable and post-processing sessions.

The timetable is flexible and may depend on local weather conditions, but generally, the tour will be something like this:
Most days we’ll start early in the morning to reach our destination before sunrise. Here we have a couple of hours shooting session (if possible in more than one locations) after which we will head back to our guesthouse for a well-deserved full Scottish breakfast. The day will continue with either master classes about post-processing technique or driving to our next destination for sunset, depending on distance and weather conditions.

Push boundaries.

Unscheduled stops at the suggestion of a participant are always welcomed to allow photographs to be taken during our tours, as long as there is enough time and everyone agrees to do so. I myself have found many unexpected stunning photographs down the road while driving, as the Isle of Skye can reveal surprising wonders just at every turn, especially because of its ever-changing light. After all, this is the true essence of adventure.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TOUR INCLUDE:

Neist Point Lighthouse

Probably the most popular location to shoot a gorgeous sunset overlooking the Outer Hebrides, Neist Point is the most westerly point on Skye. We will be shooting the iconic view of the lighthouse and the famous rock formations from a nearby hilltop at sunset. The view is absolutely breathtaking and there are plenty of locations to set up for a variety of different compositions, either you decide to shoot with a wide-angle and include the interesting foreground, or with a telelens for a more compressed perspective.

The legendary Elgol beach

One of my favorite locations in the whole of Scotland. The legendary beach of Elgol is definitely worth the long drive. A unique stunning location with the majestic Cuillin Mountain ridge on the background. Photographic opportunities here are nearly endless, ranging from close-ups of rounded stones, patterns and rock textures, long exposures of crashing waves on the rocks, and the incredible variety of rock formation itself give no limits to your imagination. We will be shooting this location starting way before sunset.

The Old Man of Storr

The most popular destination on the Isle of Skye, the Storr is also one of Scotland’s most iconic places. Part of the Trotternish Ridge, the rocky jagged pinnacles were created by an ancient landslide that forged one of the most photographed landscapes in the world. The Old Man of Storr quite deserves its fame and is considered by many one of the most spectacular sights in the world. The viewpoint for the best shot is located a short walk past the rock pinnacles, from where you can see the stunning Sound of Raasay in the background. Once on the top, you will be rewarded with epic views all around.

Loch Fada

An excellent location which offers lovely reflections of the Old Man of Storr from the south end of the loch. This location is perfect for shooting both with a wideangle and a telephoto lens, and with a bit of luck we may find boats on the lake for an interesting foreground. We are going to want to be still weather for the best reflections, so this must be planned according to weather conditions.

Talisker Bay

Talisker Bay is set in a dramatic scenery reminiscent of Jurassic age. The top of the beach is covered in rounded black rocks of all sizes, which are in sharp contrast to the silver sands and represent an amazing foreground to work with. From a landscape photography perspective, the bay offers countless opportunities and is renowned for its sunsets. It is best visited at low tide when a large white sandy beach is exposed. There is both black and white on the beach, often blended by the burns flowing out to create beautiful patterns.

The Quiraing

The Quiraing is my favorite place on the Isle of Skye. Raw nature at its best and heaven for a landscape photographer. Part of the Trotternish Ridge escarpment formed by multiple ancient landslips, the Quiraing is the only part of the slip still moving and today features rugged cliffs, green valleys, shimmering lochs, and great stone walls. The area offers spectacular views in nearly every direction from wherever you are on the trail. Experiencing a sunrise up here is absolutely not to be missed. As a landscape photographer, you really couldn’t ask for better.

Fairy Pools

Located at the feet of the Black Cuillins Mountains, the Fairy Pools are natural pools fed by mountain streams and created by the River Brittle, whose waters have incredible transparency and color. The 20 minutes walk takes you along a series of natural pools with crystal clear water that cuts its way through the rocky area and creates a lot of small waterfalls which build stunning contrast to the surrounding mountainscape. The emerald and turquoise waters create a fairy-like scenery which is exceptionally suitable for long exposure photography.

Sligachan

Sligachan is the crossroads of the island and as such an easy spot to photograph where it’s worth stopping as there are a number of excellent photo locations in the area. The old stone bridge over the river with the Cuillin Mountains in the background is a classic, yet extremely interesting shot. There are also other impressive hills just behind the bridge, such as the triangle-shaped Glamaig, which is incredibly photogenic.

Eilean Donan Castle

Although not exactly on the Isle of Skye, the castle of Eilean Donan needs no introduction. It is probably the most renowed icon of Scotland and it’s only a short drive outside the island just passed the Skye Bridge so we will head to Kyle of Lochalsh for a sunset photograph of one of the most photographed castles in the world.

PUSH YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY TO NEW HEIGHTS

To help participants improve their photographic skills, you are encouraged to explore each location we visit and to find your own viewpoints and compositions. You will be given assistance to capture the photograph and supported with technical and artistic tips.

The precise locations of most outings will be determined day-to-day according to seasonal developments and weather conditions in order to maximize the photographic potential of each day. Some venues indeed can be more interesting with particular weather conditions such as mist, others with clouds and so on. However, we will visit all the places aforementioned, weather permitting.

I am passionate about what I do and spend a lot of time into planning a workshop in order to ensure that everyone has a great experience and is able to make the most of the photographic opportunities and tuition.

THE TUTOR

GUIDO TRAMONTANO GUERRITORE

Guido is a photographer with 20 years of experience and over 16 years in Fine Art Landscape Photography. He has always been an advocate of knowledge sharing and a keen teacher. He regularly teaches classes and gives lectures about composition and techniques concerning landscape photography in schools and private organisations. He believes though that the best way to learn and improve skills is practicing in the field with the assistance of an expert photographer’s mentoring. This ensures a much faster and pleasant learning curve. His landscape photography workshops are a full immersion aimed at providing all participants the best support possible throughout the entire course length. The small group number of participants, typically 2 to 4 people, ensures continuous and tailored tuition, both in the field and out of it.
